Monkey Girl Beads – Art Quilts by Nana Montgomery

“Working with fabric is my passion. I love the process and tactility of combining fabric and paint to create my
art quilts. The imagery in my quilts is an expression of ideas and emotions from life experience and dreams.”
I’m inspired by the surrealistic tradition which draws a focus on the expression of emotions, ideas and
dreams. By employing a vocabulary of symbols that work on multiple levels of meaning, I am intent on expressing universal themes such as love, life and death. Visual references to the elements in nature such as fire and water help to
deepen the connection that I feel to the natural forces and their universal use in the symbology of emotion.
The figures are flying, dancing, running and frozen in the places where we live, both physically and
emotionally. While exploring issues from my own life, the viewer is invited into a world of common experience and emotional resonance.
I’m seeking to expand the notion of what a quilt can be. I continue to be drawn to the quiltmaking tradition and my choice of media is as important as the issues and ideas that I am exploring.”
