India Joze – Paul Henri

I have nostalgic bones. I am attracted to subjects kinesthetically. Often it is a rusty item from the past, the lines on the face of a tribal elder, some discarded tool or an ancient stone building. Something deep within me longs for days when life was simpler, when it was more rooted in the earth and the natural world. The photographs in this exhibit at India Joze were taken in Rajasthan, India where life is much simpler and rooted in the natural world.

Light and texture are crucial elements for me in capturing images. A face or an object illuminated in just the right way brings out the textural qualities on a visceral level. This allows me, and hopefully my viewer, to feel as if the objects of my photographs are within reach.

The mystery surrounding what I see is intriguing to me: the alchemical process of metals, the cornerstones of a medieval chateau, the view to a field through a doorway in a dilapidated rock wall, or the expressions on tribal peoples as they see me approach with camera in hand.

My work is to honor who and what has gone before-to bring into focus some of the many stories that represent a part of history and a part of humanity. I want to preserve and capture the beauty in what might ordinarily go unnoticed.

This exhibit is only a snapshot of a larger body of work of the beautiful people who inhabit this huge and exotic country called India. Many more can be seen on my website.

Thank you for taking the time to view my work.
